New Zealand will aim to kick off their World Test Championship (WTC) campaign on a strong note when they host the West Indies in the series opener at Hagley Oval on Tuesday. The Black Caps enter the three-Test series in Christchurch, Wellington, and Tauranga with confidence after sweeping the visitors in the recent T20 (3-1) and ODI (3-0) series in November.

The Black Caps, winners of the inaugural WTC title in 2021, know the importance of performing at home. Rob Walter, taking charge of the team for the first time as coach, emphasized that success in familiar conditions is vital for their 2027 WTC ambitions. “Winning at home is important … so we’re looking to start strong and start quick and lay down a marker early,” he said.

West Indies, meanwhile, will look to build on lessons from their recent red-ball losses to Australia and India. The Caribbean side last won a Test in New Zealand nearly 31 years ago but retains the potential for individual brilliance to turn matches. Skipper Roston Chase emphasized the importance of playing good, competitive cricket rather than focusing solely on victory. “Our main goal is to play some good cricket and make the Kiwis work as hard as possible,” he said.

The West Indies attack will be bolstered by the return of veteran paceman Kemar Roach, while New Zealand’s seam options feature a fresh look. Kyle Jamieson has been rested, and Will O’Rourke and Ben Sears are injured, giving Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, and recalled 32-year-old Blair Tickner the responsibility to lead the pace attack.

Captain Tom Latham expressed confidence in the new-look pace unit. “We’ve seen the likes of Foulkes, Duffy and Tickner come into the international scene and perform straight away, which is really exciting,” he said.

As the series gets underway, New Zealand will aim to establish dominance early and set the tone for their WTC campaign, while West Indies will seek to challenge the hosts and create opportunities for memorable upsets.
