“Nanjing University of Information Sciences and Technology (NUIST) Offers Fully Funded Scholarships to Pakistani Students in Climate Change and Environmental Governance”.

Nanjing University of Information Sciences and Technology (NUIST) has taken a proactive step to support Pakistani students in their efforts to address the pressing climate crisis. The university is offering fully funded scholarships in the field of Climate Change and Environmental Governance, aiming to enhance the research capacity of students in this crucial area.

Professor Dr. Tong Jiang, the Executive Director for the Research Institute of Climatic and Environmental Governance at NUIST, confirmed the availability of these scholarships. He emphasized the collaboration between NUIST and NUST, as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to promote scientific research cooperation and facilitate student and faculty exchanges. Furthermore, partnerships with other renowned Pakistani universities, including Quaid-e-Azam University, COMSATS University Islamabad, and the Pakistan Meteorological Department, are also being expanded to foster research collaboration.

The scholarship program aims to admit young scientists from Pakistani universities, specializing in climate change and climate risk studies, for advanced research at NUIST. Additionally, the university will offer Environmental Change Postdoctoral positions, providing further opportunities for research and expertise development.

Professor Jiang highlighted the focus of the project in Pakistan, particularly on water shortage and climate change tipping points. Considering Pakistan’s recent experiences with devastating floods and ongoing challenges of high temperatures and drought, addressing water scarcity is of utmost importance. With a significant dependence on agriculture, Pakistan’s economic system relies heavily on water resources. Therefore, the research conducted through this program will seek to mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce water shortages.

Furthermore, Professor Jiang acknowledged the air pollution and smog issues prevalent in Pakistan. Industrial emissions, vehicular emissions, domestic emissions, construction-related dust emissions, smoke from brick kilns, and agricultural waste burning contribute to poor air quality. To combat these challenges, he recommended strategies such as relocating industries from cities to designated industrial areas, transitioning to renewable energy sources, promoting affordable public transportation, implementing extensive tree plantation initiatives, and improving livestock and waste management in cities.

Through these scholarships and collaborative efforts, NUIST aims to empower Pakistani students and researchers to address climate change and environmental governance challenges effectively. By investing in education and research, this initiative can contribute to finding sustainable solutions and shaping a better future for Pakistan and the global community.
