The Punjab government has made significant security arrangements for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Edition X, which are scheduled to take place in the province starting from April 9 and April 11, respectively. To ensure the safety and smooth conduct of these high-profile events, the government has requisitioned troops from Rangers, the Pakistan Army, and aviation assets for enhanced protection.

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier will begin on April 9 in Lahore, where women’s cricket teams from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Scotland, Ireland, West Indies, and Thailand will compete. The PSL-X, one of Pakistan’s biggest cricket events, will follow on April 11, with matches being held in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. Both tournaments are expected to attract large crowds and high-profile international participants, including cricketers, match officials, dignitaries, media personnel, and production crews.

In response to security needs, the federal government has granted VVIP status to the six participating teams in the World Cup qualifier. The Punjab home department has planned a multi-tiered security response for the teams’ protection during their stay, travel, and movements within Lahore until April 20.

The security framework for the events includes a three-tiered approach. The first tier will consist of police and the Special Protection Unit (SPU) for close protection. The second tier will involve the deployment of one wing of the Punjab Rangers, while the third tier will include two companies from the ex-Standard Infantry Battalion, as well as a standby anti-terrorism platoon from the ex-Light Commando Battalion. To further enhance the security measures, a helicopter will be available as part of the standby security apparatus.

For the PSL-X, the security arrangements are equally robust. The home department has requisitioned security forces for all three match venues in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. Police and SPU teams will provide close protection for the cricketers, while each venue will be covered by one wing of the Rangers and two companies of the ex-Standard Infantry Battalion.

In response to the security request, the interior ministry has granted approval for the deployment of the necessary troops and aviation assets. The comprehensive security plan ensures that the events can be carried out with minimal disruptions while prioritizing the safety of participants, spectators, and the public.

As the IPL-X and the World Cup Qualifier bring international attention to Pakistan, the government’s commitment to a seamless and secure event will play a crucial role in showcasing the country’s capacity to host major sports events.
