The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially named Mike Hesson, the former head coach of New Zealand, as the new White-ball Head Coach for the Pakistan men’s cricket team. Hesson will assume responsibility for both ODI and T20I squads, stepping into a role that had been vacant since Gary Kirsten’s resignation in late 2023.

The appointment comes at a crucial time as Pakistan prepares to host Bangladesh for a five-match T20 series starting May 25. The decision to bring Hesson onboard is aimed at stabilizing leadership and rebuilding the team’s white-ball performance following inconsistent showings in recent international events.

Why This Move Matters

Mike Hesson is no stranger to international cricket. Widely respected for his analytical and strategic coaching style, Hesson previously led New Zealand’s national team through a successful period that included a World Cup final appearance in 2015. He has also coached Kenya and is currently the head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaching, Hesson’s appointment is expected to offer the stability and tactical expertise Pakistan desperately needs in the shorter formats.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced the appointment on social platform X, stating, “After evaluation of numerous applications received against the vacancy, I’m pleased to announce that Mike Hesson will join us as the new White-ball Head Coach for the Pakistan National Team. We look forward to his expertise and guidance in shaping the future of Pakistani cricket.”

Hesson is scheduled to take charge starting May 26, right after the Bangladesh series kicks off.

Aaqib Javed Takes on a New Role

In a parallel move, Aaqib Javed, a former fast bowler and coach, has been appointed as Director of High Performance. Javed had temporarily filled the white-ball coaching role earlier and brings a wealth of experience from both domestic and international coaching circuits.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi also welcomed Javed’s appointment, emphasizing its importance in strengthening Pakistan’s cricket infrastructure. “Together, they will play a pivotal role in the evolution and success of Pakistan cricket,” he added.

Looking Ahead: Big Challenges, Bigger Expectations

The appointments come on the heels of a disappointing run for Pakistan in key international tournaments, including the 2023 Asia Cup, ODI World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy. The national team has faced criticism for inconsistent selections, lack of direction, and underperformance in high-stakes matches.

With a new leadership team in place, there is renewed hope among fans and stakeholders that Pakistan cricket will begin to rebuild strategically—with a clear focus on fitness, consistency, and mental strength.

As the countdown to the Bangladesh series begins, all eyes will be on Mike Hesson and Aaqib Javed to deliver results that reflect the talent and potential within Pakistan’s cricketing ranks.
