National snooker player Babar Masih has publicly called on the federal government and the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to acknowledge his remarkable achievements on the international stage. Speaking at a press conference, Babar expressed frustration over the lack of recognition and financial support despite winning numerous medals for Pakistan.

Babar Masih, a prominent figure in Pakistan’s snooker scene, has represented the country in multiple international competitions, bringing home a strong medal tally. He claimed to have defeated India’s renowned player Pankaj Advani recently, underscoring his high skill level. Despite these accomplishments, Babar revealed that he has not received any official rewards or recognition from the government.

“I have a long list of medals but have never been given any government recognition or financial reward,” Babar said. He urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, political adviser Rana Sanaullah Khan, and PSB Director General Yasir Pirzada to address his concerns and properly honor his contributions to the sport.

Over his career, Babar has been crowned Asian champion three times in team events and once as world champion in a team competition. He has also earned four gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals in various tournaments. Despite these successes, Babar emphasized that support from the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) has been inconsistent, with official tours receiving some backing but private tours largely ignored.

An official from PBSA confirmed Babar’s medal wins in team events but noted that he is yet to secure a major individual international title. The official still acknowledged Babar’s deserving place for recognition given his contributions to the sport.

In response to Babar’s appeal, PSB Director General Yasir Pirzada stated that the Board’s policies on athlete rewards are transparent and publicly accessible. He invited Babar to formally present his case to the PSB if his achievements meet the eligibility criteria for awards.

Meanwhile, PBSA chairman Alamgir A. Shaikh recently met with Secretary of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC), Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, and PSB DG Yasir to discuss the federation’s ongoing challenges. Alamgir requested the release of annual and special grants for PBSA, with assurances that the matter will be brought up at the next PSB meeting for consideration.

The PBSA chairman also raised several long-standing issues facing the federation, hoping to secure more robust support and resources for snooker and billiards in Pakistan.

Babar Masih’s case highlights the broader issue of athlete recognition and support in Pakistan’s sports ecosystem. Despite outstanding performances on international platforms, many athletes struggle to gain the recognition and financial backing they deserve. Babar’s appeal calls attention to the need for more structured and consistent reward systems that motivate athletes and honor their dedication.

As Pakistan continues to grow its presence in international sports, addressing these gaps could boost athlete morale and encourage upcoming talent to strive for excellence on the world stage. Babar Masih’s persistence and success serve as a strong reminder of the potential within Pakistani sports that awaits greater acknowledgment and support.
