Alexander Zverev and Coco Gauff advanced to the third round of the Canadian Open with dominant performances, signaling strong momentum as the US Open approaches.

In the men’s draw, fourth-seeded Zverev defeated Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The German looked confident and composed, controlling rallies from the baseline and serving with precision. Zverev, who has been steadily climbing back into top form after his 2022 injury, said he was “feeling good physically” and is focused on building rhythm before heading to New York for the final Grand Slam of the year.

Zverev faced little resistance from the Dutchman, breaking serve early in both sets and never allowing Griekspoor to settle into the match. His aggressive return game and powerful groundstrokes gave him the edge throughout the contest. With this win, Zverev sets up a third-round clash with Karen Khachanov, promising a more intense battle as the tournament progresses.

On the women’s side, Coco Gauff delivered a commanding performance against Elisabetta Cocciaretto, winning 6-2, 6-1 in just over an hour. The 20-year-old American, seeded fifth, was clinical from the first game. Gauff’s athleticism and strong defensive skills left her Italian opponent scrambling to keep up. She broke serve five times in the match and saved all break points on her own serve.

Gauff has been enjoying a surge of confidence after winning the Washington Open last week, her second title of the season. Speaking after her victory, she noted, “I’m playing with more freedom now and just trying to enjoy every match. These wins help build the kind of belief you need going into a Slam.”

Her next match will be against the experienced Petra Kvitová, a two-time Wimbledon champion. It’s expected to be one of the headline matchups of the third round, with both players in good form.

Elsewhere in the tournament, several other top seeds also progressed. Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Iga Świątek are all through to the next round, setting up exciting encounters as the draw tightens.

The Canadian Open serves as a crucial stop in the lead-up to the US Open, offering both ATP and WTA players a chance to fine-tune their game on hard courts. For players like Zverev and Gauff, the strong early performances are a signal of intent, and fans can expect high-level tennis as the tournament heads into the later rounds.

With the big names moving forward and potential blockbuster matchups on the horizon, the 2025 Canadian Open continues to deliver on its promise of thrilling action and fierce competition.
