India is making a determined push to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, with strong backing from the government and a clear ambition to stage major international sporting events. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) sees this as a crucial milestone in its larger goal of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games in the same city.

A delegation from the Commonwealth Sports Federation visited Ahmedabad last week, sharing insights from past editions of the Games and working with Indian officials to prepare a comprehensive bid. The final proposal will be submitted by the August 31 deadline.

According to IOA executive council member Harpal Singh, the country’s current mood is highly favorable for sporting activities. He emphasized that the government is fully committed to bringing global sports competitions to India, pointing to the strong existing infrastructure and detailed plans for future developments as key strengths.

Singh highlighted that Ahmedabad offers both readiness and vision, factors that impressed the visiting delegation. Beyond infrastructure, the bid focuses heavily on sustainability, gender balance, and eco-friendly initiatives, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Games, he stressed, should inspire the youth of the Commonwealth community while showcasing India’s cultural diversity.

India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi, an event overshadowed by allegations of corruption and mismanagement. Determined to move past that episode, the IOA aims to deliver a flawless 2030 Games, enhancing the country’s image on the global stage.

Hosting the Games would be India’s first major multi-nation sporting event in over a decade, bringing together athletes from more than 70 countries and territories. Singh believes this would be an important step toward the ultimate goal — securing the 2036 Olympics.

India faces competition from Canada and Nigeria for the 2030 hosting rights. The decision will be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow this November. With strong political will, robust infrastructure plans, and a long-term vision, India hopes to position Ahmedabad as the clear choice for the Games.
