Sam Curran Open to Replacing Ben Stokes in England Test Team After Retirement

England all-rounder Sam Curran says he would gladly seize the opportunity to return to Test cricket following Ben Stokes’ retirement but insists he is staying focused on his performances rather than the growing speculation over who will replace the England captain.

Stokes’ unexpected retirement has left England searching not only for a new Test captain but also for an all-rounder capable of filling one of the most influential roles in the team ahead of next month’s Test series against Pakistan.

Curran, who last played a Test match in 2021, is regarded as one of the leading candidates to replace Stokes thanks to his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the 28-year-old said representing England in Test cricket remains a major ambition.

“Of course I’d welcome the opportunity,” Curran said. “My focus is simply on performing well. Whenever the selectors decide who replaces Stokes, playing for England is always special. I’m a competitive player, and whenever I have a bat or ball in my hand, I just try to give my best.”

England felt the impact of Stokes’ absence earlier this summer when he missed the second Test against New Zealand. Without their star all-rounder, the team opted for an extra specialist batter and relied on four frontline seamers, leaving the side without its usual balance.

Finding a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder would allow England to field a stronger five-man bowling attack while also retaining a specialist spinner, making Curran a strong contender for the role.

Competition, however, remains fierce. Young all-rounders Rehan Ahmed and James Coles are also pushing for opportunities as England begin planning for a new era after Stokes.

Despite the growing speculation, Curran insists he is not allowing outside noise to distract him.

“Whenever a player like Ben Stokes retires, there’s naturally going to be a lot of discussion,” he said. “Whoever gets the chance will try to make the role their own. Ben will be a huge loss for England, but the team has to move forward.”

Curran added that he is determined to avoid placing unnecessary expectations on himself.

“There’s a lot of talk about replacing Stokes, but I don’t want to put pressure on myself. My only goal is to help England win matches. Whatever happens over the next few weeks, happens.”

With England preparing for a crucial Test series against Pakistan, the race to fill the void left by one of the country’s greatest all-rounders is only just beginning.
