The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect, citing repeated breaches of its obligations under the ICC constitution. While the suspension halts the country’s official membership status, the ICC confirmed that the United States’ national teams will still be allowed to compete in upcoming international events, including preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

In its statement, the ICC Board highlighted several key reasons behind the decision. These included USA Cricket’s failure to implement a functional governance structure, a lack of progress in securing National Governing Body recognition from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and actions that caused “significant reputational damage” to the sport both domestically and globally. Although the ICC did not provide specific details of the reputational issues, it emphasized the seriousness of the breaches.
The governing body explained that the suspension, while severe, was necessary to safeguard the sport’s long-term credibility. “The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game,” the ICC said. It stressed, however, that athletes and competitions remain a top priority, and efforts will be made to ensure that players are not adversely affected by the governance crisis.
Importantly, the United States men’s cricket team will still participate in the T20 World Cup scheduled for February next year, with management oversight temporarily shifted to the ICC. The team, which impressed global audiences by reaching the Super Eight stage of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, has already secured qualification for the 2026 edition of the tournament.
This decision follows earlier warnings issued to USA Cricket. At the 2024 ICC annual general meeting, the board placed the organization “on notice” for non-compliance with membership criteria and granted it a 12-month deadline to implement key reforms. The ICC’s latest move signals that insufficient progress was made, forcing the board’s hand.
For cricket in the United States, the suspension poses a critical moment. While the national team remains active, the absence of a fully functional governing body raises concerns about the sport’s growth and stability in one of the world’s largest sports markets. With cricket set to feature in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the spotlight is firmly on USA Cricket to resolve its governance shortcomings and regain ICC membership before the global stage arrives on home soil.
The suspension serves as both a warning and an opportunity. For now, the ICC’s intervention ensures the continuity of international cricket for US athletes, but the organization’s credibility and future depend on urgent structural reforms. The next steps taken by USA Cricket will determine whether the sport can thrive in a country with immense potential yet ongoing administrative challenges.
